But veteran senator mum on running mate

AFTER weeks of silence, Sen. Miriam Defensor-Santiago on Tuesday confirmed what she had announced several months ago: she will be joining the presidential race in 2016 because she has recovered from her bout with cancer.

Santiago, who was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in 2014, said she is 100 percent sure of running “unless I get struck by another bout of cancer.”

She will file her certificate of candidacy (COC) on Friday.

According to the feisty senator, she already has a running mate and a Senate line-up under the People’s Reform Party (PRP) but she refused to identify them.

“It would be prudent [to run for President]because I think I would disappoint a lot of people if I don’t do that,” she said during the launch of her second book “Stupid is Forevermore.”

The veteran lawmaker said the Philippines will be a better country with her at the helm.

“I can apply for a job abroad like the one I lost because of my cancer but I think since I have served the government from the very beginning, I will end my career here,” she added.

Santiago will run under her own PRP, which was formed in 1992 when she first took a stab at the presidency. She lost to Fidel V. Ramos, the candidate endorsed by former President Corazon Aquino.

The senator has been on sick leave since she publicly announced that she has stage 4 lung cancer. But despite her poor health, she is the most prolific legislator for having the most number of bills and resolutions filed.

It was also her health condition that forced her to give up her post as judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Santiago was named to the ICC in December 2011. She was the first Filipino and first Asian from a developing country to be elected as judge in that court. She was supposed to serve a nine-year term.

Santiago first expressed her intention to run for President in July this year.

Prior to her official announcement, Santiago had hinted on Facebook that she may run for President in 2016.

“I am not going to be coy. Society leaders have urged me to seek the presidency. I can rise to the occasion,” she posted.

Santiago also said that she already has a runningmate.

She however refused to identify him, only hinting that he has already announced his intention to run for vice president.

“He has already announced. We will be running together. I cannot give the answer because his wife might scold him,” the senator told reporters.

So far, there are six candidates eyeing the vice presidency and two of them –Senators Ferdinand Marcos Jr., and Gegorio Honasan 2nd – have filed their COCs.

The other four are Senators Francis Escudero, Alan Peter Cayetano, Antonio Trillanes 4th and Rep. Leni Robredo.

Escudero is the runningmate of Sen. Grace Poe, thus, he is out of the picture. Trillanes may also be out because he has expressed his support to Poe.

The only vice presidential candidates who don’t have a candidate for president are Marcos and Senator Alan Peter Cayetano.

Cayetano’s plan to convince Davao city mayor Rodrigo Duterte to seek the presidency was unsuccessful after the latter announced that he will not be running in 2016.
As for Marcos, the senator has said that he is keeping all his options open.

the two is indeed a good tandem…

  2. Miriam and Bongbong will be the better Choice as Duterte is out of the picture….they both were the only ones who stood against pnoy during the CJ Corona trial…..Miriam -Bongbong is better than grace-chiz and mar_Leni….

  3. Maid Miriam is the shining hope..but let she choose an honest VP tandem ready to continue whatever good governance she will implement just in case. Marcos Jr. is not a resounding choice he is a Mama’s boy. What with Imelda still alive…the palace will again raise its ghosts of the past.

  4. Mirriam is honest, intelligent, couragous, experienced & ready. She doesnt mix words & she doesnt suffer fools. I think she would make an exellent president. I would like to see alan cayetano run with her as vice president. You need honest people in government & they are both honest. Go for it & help the Philippines move forward.

  5. Santiago for president and Marcos Jr. for vice president is the best combo of them all. Brain, charisma, honesty, humble. fighter. doer, giver, leader, loving people, caring and above all the love for the Pilipino people.

All the best and may the power of the almighty will guide you to prosperous and victorious endeavor.

Meriam for President and Bongbong for Vice President. Its formidable team. Meriam has served all the three branches of government. Bongbong has money to spend. Suggestion: after filing your candidacy on Friday, please form immediately a technical committee composed of brilliant and patriotic Filipinos to draft a plan for sustainable development for the country based on policy of reconciliation with justice. Good luck and God bless.

  8. Good Tandem – Merriam Santiago – for President and Bong Bong Marcos for Vice President, the most trusted candidates and has capability to run the government..
We will vote MDS and BBM thats all.

  9. Senator Miriam Defensor Santiago is the best candidate. I believe she has the qualities to be the president. Good luck Madam Senator.

  10. Will wait till she file her coc,if Sen.Miriam do hopefully it will be Sen. Cayetano as her vice president then we have a better choice.

  11. I will support you, Madam Miriam. Hope COMELEC will brave enough to handle pressures from PNOY administration and do there job accordingly. This is our last chance to save our country and people should vote wisely.

Yes, Duterte’s votes will go to Sen. Mirriam and if she choose Sen. Alan Cayetano as her running mate, they will be ” A DREAM TEAM AND A TEAM TO BEAT” come 2016. GO MIRRIAM-ALAN GO.

  12. Yes! Finally, an option better than the current candidates! Go, Madam Miriam! We will support you all the way. May God let you win the Presidency! There is no other candidate more qualified and more fit for the post than you are.

  13. She will be an outstanding President if elected by the people on 2016.
I hope she will reveal soon her program for government. My suggestions: uplift the poorest 10 provinces in the Philippines; use the PNR right of way for another modern LRT line, even it will initially use second hand cars, but must be of good tracks; proceed with the new Water supply dam project in Quezon province area. concentrate indusries in 3 major export processing zones; concentrate in Clark for new IT inventions and Apps; others on agri needs equipment and construction equipment. Implement researches from IRRI. Create a new Infrastturcture Department for M. Manila and 4 adjoining provinces. Raise salaries of Nurses and Teachers.Increase allowances of soldiers.

    • @Radd M, please name the 10 poorest provinces of the Philippines, i would like to know them, also should create infrastructure department for the whole country not just M. Manila and surrounding provinces.

The Philippines will be better than before if you are the President.
