Misamis jail guards in drug mess sacked

MISAMIS ORIENTAL: Governor Yevgeny Vincente Emano on Thursday ordered the suspension of three jail guards amid the scandal of illegal drug trade that thrived in the provincial jail.

The visibly irked Emano did not mention the names of the jail guards as he ordered a regular mandatory drug test to all provincial jail personnel.

He said one of the jail guards was preventively suspended.

Emano ordered the drug test after a surprise inspection of the provincial jail where shabu (methamphetamine hydrochloride) worth P40,000, weighing scale, and drug paraphernalia were recovered.

Aside from the illegal drugs, jail authorities also recovered improvised knives, mobile phones, and phone chargers.

He said that one of the jail guards confessed as the courier, allowing the entry of illegal drugs into the tightly guarded provincial jail.

Emano said he had ordered the dismissal from service of the self-confessed drug courier as he ordered the investigation of the suspended jail guards.

“The jail guards reportedly saw the illegal drug activities right before their eyes, but did nothing to prevent it,” the governor said.

He said that he will not hesitate to dismiss jail guards found remiss in their duties and responsibilities. Emano, who detests illegal drugs, has been in the forefront in the fight against illegal drugs since he was elected provincial governor in 2013.

He said that his administration had dismissed several provincial employees who tested positive during surprise drug tests. “The policy against illegal drugs would continue for as long as I am the governor,” Emano said.
