As the Philippine-based international pageant Miss Earth celebrates its 15th year on December 5, Vienna, Austria will play host to the grand coronation night at the Marx Halle events center.
This week, reigning Miss Earth-Philippines queen Angelia Gabrena Ong of Manila City will join 80 other candidates from the world in the European city for the pre-pageant activities that will begin on November 18.
“We would like the world to recognize women in this pageant not only as an inspiration of beauty in face and form, but more importantly, as confident, talented and intellectual individuals who are elected to serve as ‘Environmental Ambassadors’ in their respective countries to enhance environmental awareness and empower women all over the world to be one in this cause,” said Lorraine Schuck, founder of Miss Earth and executive vice president of Carousel Productions Inc., which annually mounts the pageant.
Recognizing the slow but increasing deterioration of the environment, Miss Earth decided, long before it became a worldwide movement, to make saving the environment its advocacy.
“Since then Miss Earth had quickly grown and developed into the biggest and prestigious international environmental event channeled through a beauty pageant,” Shuck added.
True to its goals, this year’s pre-pageant will comprise of environmental activities all around Austria as part of the candidates’ campaign climate change awareness, and promoting the 5’R’s (Rethink, Reduce, ReUse, Recycle and Respect) as the key in reducing the world’s carbon footprint. These specific causes were introduced by Austria’s hosting team headed by Sina Schmid and Andreas Siedl of PULS4.
Meanwhile, as the pre-pageant activities approach, Ramon Monzon, Carousel’s president and CEO enthused, “There is no better highlight to Miss Earth’s Crystal Year than holding it in Vienna—an eco-friendly city which we shall also showcase during the show.”
