MISS Philippines-Earth 2014 winners were saddened by the deteriorating state of the Pasig River during a ferry tour and called on the public to help clean it up.
Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino took the newly crowned Miss Philippines-Earth Jamie Herrell, Miss Philippines Eco-tourism Monique Manuel, Miss Philippines Earth Water Kim Covert and Miss Philippines Earth Air Diane Querrer for a ride on the newly opened Pasig River ferry.
The beauty queens rode the ferry boat from Guadalupe in Makati City to Escolta in Manila.
After seeing the state of the river, the beauty queens expressed dismay and urged the public to take part in its rehabilitation.
Herrell considered the Pasig as the best place to experience the Philippines. “The river is a great asset to the Filipinos but we are wasting it,” she said.
Garbage was seen floating on the famous river which emitted a foul odor.
The pageant winners endorsed the river ferry as a alternative mode of transportation for people needing to go around Metro Manila They also congratulated Tolentino for initiating the revival of the service.
Tolentino said that on its third week, the operation of the mass transport system was still being fine-tuned, particularly its management and administrative aspects.
