MORE than 300 tons of garbage have been collected by personnel of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) after the New Year revelry.
Francis Martinez, MMDA Metropark Way Clearing Group head, over the weekend said street sweepers and clearing teams have collected a total of 1,086 cubic meters or equivalent to 319 tons of garbage in major thoroughfares from January 1 to 3, 2016.
Martinez, however, noted that there was a reduction in the volume of garbage collected this year as compared to the 2,000 cubic meters last year.
He said light rains that poured on New Year’s Eve contributed to the reduction of garbage.
The public, Martinez explained, could have been discouraged by the rains from lighting up more firecrackers to welcome 2016.
Two of the biggest garbage producers were Balintawak market in Quezon City with 547 cubic meters or 156 tons of garbage and Baclaran market in Paranaque City with 336 cubic meters or 96 tons.
Revelers who ushered in the New Year at Rizal Park (Luneta) in Manila left 63.36 cubic meters or 18 tons of garbage.
