IN an effort to help in the rehabilitation of areas devastated by super typhoon “Yolanda,” the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) has canceled its Christmas party this year.
MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said the money that the agency will be saved from the annual event will be donated for the typhoon victims in the Visayas region.
“Instead of pouring the agency’s resources to a party, we will donate them as part of our assistance to the typhoon victims,”said Tolentino.
Besides canceling its Christmas party, the MMDA will also conduct a gift giving activity to the victims of typhoon in Palo, Leyte on December 19.
MMDA General Manager Corazon Jimenez earlier said that their employees have been donating a small portion of their salary for the victims of the typhoon.
The agency also launched a relief drive to help survivors of the recent super typhoon Yolanda that greatly hit Eastern Visayas.
Jimenez said employees donated cash and bags of in-kind that have been sent to the victims.
“Even the children of some of our employees are donating their piggy bank for the victims of the calamity,” she added.
The MMDA was primarily tasked to clear Tacloban City of typhoon debris.
MMDA personnel composed of rescue teams and workers were deployed in areas badly hit by the typhoon in Eastern Visayas to help in the government’s relief and rehabilitation efforts. RITCHIE A. HORARIO
