MMDA deploys 2,400 traffic enforcers

ALL of the 2,400 traffic enforcers of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) have been deployed in major thoroughfares to man traffic.

The MMDA’s move was in response to the call of Sen. Francis Escudero for the agency to deploy its traffic enforcers in Metro Manila’s major roads to ease the traffic jams.

Crisanto Saruca, MMDA Traffic Discipline Office head, said traffic enforcers are on three shifts during the holiday season.

Saruca attributed the increase in traffic volume to the influx of people and vehicles from Cavite, Laguna, Bulacan, and other areas in Central Luzon going to Metro Manila to shop or spend the holidays.

The volume of vehicles plying Edsa remains the primary reason behind the traffic gridlock experienced by motorists.

The carrying capacity of Edsa is estimated to be 160,000 vehicles on each direction.
Before the holiday season, 260,000 vehicles use the highway on a daily basis.
