The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Sunday expressed support for the demolition of an egg-like structure at the rotunda near the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 in Pasay City (Metro Manila).
The Circulo del Mundo, which was built in 2008, is a product of a landmark rotunda design competition conducted by the MMDA.
In throwing his support behind the tearing down of the structure, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino over the weekend said the Circulo will be moved to a nearby location.
He explained that the current location is affected by ongoing construction of the NAIA elevated expressway.
“We need to move the structure so that we could erect the posts for the expressway,” Tolentino said.
The MMDA chief pointed out that the move will help ease traffic congestion around the country’s premier airport.
Once the structure is demolished, Tolentino said, more lanes that could decongest traffic in the area will be opened.
“The traffic condition around the airport will improve a lot because motorists can use the Skyway and the elevated expressway,” he added.
The NAIA elevated expressway is expected to be finished next year.
Reports said contractors of the expressway have started demolishing the Circulo.
