THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority’s (MMDA) is set to resume its “3-in-1” Estero Blitz clean-up drive this week.
Baltazar Melgar, head of the MMDA Flood Control and Sewerage Management Office, ovwer the weekend said the “3-in-1” cleanup operation will start on Tuesday in Manila.
The project, launched in 2014, is a combination of the Estero Blitz, Lingap Barangay and Linis Palengke programs of the MMDA.
Melgar said the “3-in-1” Estero Blitz will clean esteros (creeks) in flood-prone areas and public markets in Manila.
The concerned barangay will also be subjected to the clean-up operation.
Part of the drive is fumigation to exterminate dengue-causing mosquitoes in various barangay.
According to Melgar, the agency will not only clean public markets but it will also conduct lectures regarding solid waste management.
He said the MMDA will start with Obrero Public market, north and south Antipolo canal and Estero de Cabulusan in Santa Cruz, Manila, on Tuesday.
Melgar added that the clean-up will be conducted in 273 creeks and waterways all over Metro Manila.
MMDA Chairman Emerson Carlos said efforts to prevent flooding in Manila would be futile if residents continued to dump garbage in waterways.
