IN a move to address traffic congestion along Epifanio de los Santos Avenue (EDSA), the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Monday will modify locations of the U-turn slots in the area.
Neomie Recio, MMDA’s Engineering Center director, over the weekend said it was agreed that the U-turn slot along West Avenue will be closed down.
“The problem with the existing U-turn slots is that motorists don’t usually follow traffic rules,” Recio said.
She added that the U-turn slot would be relocated before the flyover in Quezon Avenue.
“In doing so, I suggested that we should put some safety devices,” Recio said.
Even some of the U-turn slots in Santolan area will also be closed.
Based on the recommendation of the Highway Patrol Group (HPG) of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the U-turn slot along the service road will also be closed.
Motorists are advised to use the U-turn slot under the flyover that is also used by provincial buses.
HPG director and Chief Supt. Arnold Gunnacao said they are also closing the U-turn slot at SM North and would transfer it to Landmark-Trinoma.
The U-turn slot in Kamuning will also be moved near Nepa Q-Mart.
Gunnacao said the HPG would now man not only the identified choke points on EDSA such as Balintawak, Cubao, Ortigas, Shaw Boulevard, Guadalupe and Taft Avenue but also the whole stretch of the busy thoroughfare.
Meanwhile, Crisanto Saruca, head of MMDA’s Traffic Discipline Office, said the agency’s traffic constables and HPG personnel are constantly coordinating with each other in managing traffic duties along EDSA.
