Metro Manila Film Festival 2014 Best Actress Jennylyn Mercado gratefully acknowledges that she gained her second wind in the year that was.

With TV shows and movie projects that at best can be described as “steady” in the last few years, 2014 saw breakthrough performances from the actress and singer via the hit GMA Network teleserye Rhodora X where she showed her mettle as a schizophrenic character; a well-received first solo album, Never Alone, to mark her 10th anniversary in show business; a plum calendar girl endorsement from a top liquor brand; and of course, her award-winning portrayal as Tere Madlansacay, the kind and lovable language tutor with a foolish heart in the MMFF entry English Only Please.

“Masarap at masaya yung pakiramdam na nangyari yung mga hindi mo inaasahan,” Jennylyn humbly said this week at the launch of her upcoming soap opera for her home studio. Aptly and serendipitously, the Laurice Guillen-directed series, is titled Second Chances. “Wala talaga akong in-expect na ganito ang mangyayari kaya I’m really very grateful for everything.”

Looking every bit a best actress awardee in stance and fashion, Jennylyn politely shrugged off insinuations that she may be next in line as GMA Network’s “Prime Time Queen” now that newly married Marian Rivera-Dantes is eager to start a family.

“Siyempre hindi mapapalitan ang ‘Prime Time Queen’,” she simply said, adding she isn’t gung-ho on titles, but continues to trust GMA Network in steering her much re-energized career towards its potential. Obediently, the most famous product of the TV station’s talent search Star Struck said she would accept whatever role she is given and in return, give her best possible performance.

In Second Chances, Jennylyn co-stars with Camille Prats, Rafael Rosell, and Raymart Santiago as Lyra Bermudez. Lyra is happily wife and mother until tragedy befalls her family and she loses both her husband and son.

Finding herself unable to escape the question of giving her past showbiz loves second chances, Jennylyn burst out laughing and only said, “Uy, friends kami lahat ha!”

In fact, save for Luis Manzano, ex-boyfriends Patrick Garcia (who is the father of her son AJ), Mark Herras and Dennis Trillo will be her special guests at a pre-Valentine concert on February 13 titled, Ako Na, Ako Na Mag-isa. Samahan Niyo Naman Ako, at the SM Skydome. English Only Please co-star Derek Ramsay, with whom she became good friends during the filming, will also join for what should be a very promising show.

“With the series, a the concert and other projects, wala talaga akong time for relationships ngayon. May isang non-showbiz sana pero nakawala,” Jennylyn giggled, and intriguingly left it at that.

Second Chances begins January 12, and airs weeknights on GMA Telebabad.
