THE so-called new wave section of the Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) has received a record-breaking number of 126 entries this year.
MMFF overall head and Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Francis Tolentino said 18 entries were submitted for the full-feature film, while there were 88 student-short and 18 animation participants.
Of the total entries, only five full-length, five student-short and five animation films will be chosen as finalists and will be shown from December 17 to 24 at Glorietta 4 theaters in Makati City and SM Megamall theaters in Mandaluyong City.
The MMFF new wave section was introduced four years ago to open a competition for various categories such as independent, student short and animation films.
“All of the entries are creatively diverse and insightful of the Filipino psyche,” Tolentino said.
The five full-length feature finalists will also have commercial screenings in at least 20 theaters in Metro Manila next year.
The MMFF, along with MMDA, will launch a full slate of promotional activities to generate more excitement and awareness among the public for the new wave section.
The activities include the “Are You Ready” campaign that will establish the MMFF as the event that not only showcases full length Filipino films from multi-awarded and well-known filmmakers but also fresh animation and student talents in the industry.
“This year will see the debut of the ‘Are You Ready’ campaign where people from all walks of life, including celebrities, artists, filmmakers, fashion designers, movers and shakers of the independent film industry, will drop everything that they are doing just to watch MMFF new wave section because the movies are a breath of fresh air and nothing like they’ve seen before,” Tolentino said.
