IN two weeks, the city of Manila will host the first leg of the Asia Pop Comic Con happening from September 17 to 20 at the World Trade Center in Pasay City. Its succeeding dates in Abu Dhabi and Korea are yet to be announced.
It appears to be a huge foreign funded production with some big name guests, the likes of which we haven’t seen yet for a single pop culture convention here.
Among the first to confirm attendance was Jason Momoa—a fan favorite best known as Khal Drogo from season one of the hugely popular HBO show, Game of Thrones. He has also been cast as Aquaman for an upcoming Justice League movie. He confirmed in early July, getting his fans excited.
Signing on just a few days ago was Colton Haynes who is best known to Arrow viewers as Roy Harper a.k.a. Arsenal. He also had a role on MTV’s Teen Wolf.
There’s also Jeremy Shada, voice of Finn on Adventure Time, who will be bringing his band, Make Out Monday here too.
Ten comic book artists including con favorite and legend Whilce Portacio will be here. He has worked with Marvel and is a pioneering founder at Image. If you follow him at all on social media, you’ll know he’s been hitting the con circuit big time this year. In just the last two months he’s been at San Diego Comic Con, Long Beach Comic Con and Wizard World Chicago.
Hollywood special effects artists, vinyl toy artists, cosplay celebrities (Bill Doran, Vampybit Me) are also part of the line-up, which fans can look over on the website.
While the scheduling isn’t up yet, expect some celebrity photo op and autograph sessions, a big cosplay contest: The CAGE a.k.a. Cosplay Authority Global Challenge, portfolio reviews for artists, exhibitors promoting their art, films, comics, games and toys, etc.
It’ll be interesting to see just how big geek culture has gotten in Manila, how an big international pop culture event will do here. It does happen at the same time as the Manila Bookfair and Best of Anime.
