• Moratorium on ‘Ipon’ fishing, selling starts in La Union

SAN FERNANDO CITY, La Union: The City Agriculture Office here has banned the catching of the fries of the tiny goby fish or silver fish, locally known as “Ipon,” from December to the end of January next year. Ipon is an exotic Ilocano delicacy which is usually eaten raw with drops of limejuice or vinegar. Dolores Gurtiza, city fishery coordinator, said the ban is pursuant to a provincial fishery ordinance. Violators of the ordinance could face a P5,000-fine or imprisonment. “It (the ban) is also one way to preserve and conserve its species,” Gurtiza said.
