More colorum buses impounded in Metro Manila as crackdown intensifies

More colorum passenger buses were impounded by the joint forces of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) and the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) under “Oplan Goliath.”

MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino on Sunday said the crackdown on colorum and out-of-line public transportation continues and has impounded 74 buses since it was launched late last month.

Some of the apprehended buses had “duplicated plate numbers,” Tolentino said, referring to the practice of some bus operators of copying a valid yellow license plate and attaching them to other buses.

Tolentino said some of the buses were brand new, compared to earlier operations where they impounded mostly aging vehicles.

The MMDA estimates from 500 to 1,000 colorum and out-of-line buses plying EDSA.

Both Tolentino and LTFRB Chairman Winson Ginez vowed to intensify the drive against colorum buses in Metro Manila.

Offenders will be fined P6,000 for the first and second offense and the driver’s license suspended.

For the third offense, the same fine applies but the driver’s license will be revoked.
