A FORMER barangay chairman of Calungbuyan village in Balaoan town, La Union was among the latest batch of 200 suspected drug pushers and users who surrendered on Wednesday, according to police chief, Insp. Antonio Dasalla.

The youngest to turn himself in was a 17-year-old college student, who with his 19-year-old friend, admitted to having smoked marijuana since they were 14 years old. They said many of their schoolmates were using it as well.

Another one told The Manila Times that he voluntarily surrendered after learning that his name was included in the drug watch list. He said he did it to clear his name, claiming he was a victim of a frame-up after admitting that he used shabu before, but has stopped.

Dasalla said the volunteers will be monitored through their respective Barangay Anti-Drug Abuse Councils.

Since the massive operation early this month, 1,545 have surrendered to the La Union Police Office.

Meanwhile, 4,186 drug users have surrendered, and 228 pushers were arrested in Region 1 from July 1 to 12, according to Chief Supt. Ericson Velasquez, Director of Police Regional Office 1.

Of the number, 989 drug suspects surrendered in Pangasinan; 2,030 in La Union; 766 in Ilocos Sur and 401 in Ilocos Norte.

A total of 134 people were arrested in Pangasinan, 31 in La Union, 25 in Ilocos Sur and 38 in Ilocos Norte. Seven suspects were killed in separate armed encounters in Pangasinan during the anti-illegal drug operations.
