A drug-crazed aunt who muzzled with a packaging tape her one-year-old nephew to stop him from crying and threw the body in a canal in Caloocan City has been charged with murder. Maria Ruth Mariano, 23, cried and asked forgiveness from her ward, Bryan Jay San Agustin, whose body was discovered by the child’s mother Sarra Joy, 24, last Tuesday night in a drainage along Palong Street, a few meters away from their house in Barangay 70. Mariano admitted having used drug that prompted her to muzzle the child whose persistent crying irritated her. She was arrested after her neighbor, Carmelita Bucao, saw her carrying the child wrapped with clothes and throwing the body into the drainage. The Caloocan police chief, Senior Supt. Chito Bersaluna, said the child’s parents left him under the care of Mariano when they left for work last Tuesday morning.
