Murdered Baguio trader knew his killer – police

BAGUIO CITY: Police investigators are yet to identify the killer of Chinese businessman Henry T. Lao in this city as of Wednesday but said the victim knew his assailant.

Police added that the keys to the three department stores he personally managed were missing.

Lao, 68, was found naked and dead inside his house in Barangay Ferdinand by responding policemen on Tuesday morning.

He sustained at least 34 stab wounds.

Baguio City Police Office (BCPO) acting police director, Senior Superintendent Rolando Miranda told The Manila Times that they have invited but released one suspect after an eye witness failed to positively identify him.

Miranda has ruled out robbery as the motive having found no forcible entry into Lao’s house. The money earlier reported missing was found in the victim’s safe.

He said the BCPO-SOCO found an estimated P700,000 intact inside the victim’s room. However, the keys to the three department stores being managed by Lao were missing, including his cellphone.

Relatives of the victim declined to give any statement as of press time.

Meanwhile, Cordillera police spokesperson Supt. Cherry Fajardo said operatives are in hot pursuit of one Arjay Pasamonte who is reportedly from Urdaneta town in Pangasinan

Lao’s murder was uncovered at around 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday after the driver of his brother was asked to check on him when he failed to open his three stores on time as he usually did.

The Lao family owns the Tiongsan chain of department stores in Baguio City and La Trinidad in Benguet, a hotel and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) refilling stations in the city.

Lao’s neighbors told police they heard a loud noise and later saw a man leaving the victim’s house at around 11 p.m. Monday.
