MURRAY BEATEN, NADAL, SHARAPOVA ADVANCE AS SERENA WITHDRAWS IN MADRID

MADRID: Wimbledon champion Andy Murray lost to Santiago Giraldo, 6-3, at the Madrid Masters on Thursday. World number one Rafael Nadal remains on course to retain his title as he moved into the last eight with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Finland’s Jarkko Nieminen. Maria Sharapova proved too strong for 2011 US Open champion Sam Stosur in a 6-4, 6-3 victory. World number one Serena Williams pulled out of her quarterfinals match against Petra Kvitova because of a thigh injury but has confirmed she will play in Rome next week.
