MARAWI CITY: A group of Muslim professionals opposed the assignment of police scalawags in troubled Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) calling the chief of the Philippine National Police (PNP) and President Rodrigo Duterte “to send rather the best and upright policemen and ensure peace and order in the region.” Chief Supt. Ronald ‘Bato’ de la Rosa, newly-installed chief of the PNP, recently announced that scalawags from the ranks would be sent to ARMM provinces, particularly in Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-tawi, in some sort of punishment and face the notorious Abu Sayyaf Group which is actively staging atrocities in the region. The Philippine Muslims Society (PMS), comprising mostly of lawyers from ARMM provinces of Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu, Basilan and Tawi-Tawi, opposed the idea believing that it would just aggravate the fragile situation and demoralize the public faith on law enforcers. “We ask the PNP chief to reconsider his decision to send the ‘ninja’ policemen to ARMM. Instead, he should assign the best and the brightest to protect the public from the criminals and ensure the neutrality of illegal drugs,” PMS President lawyer Jamal Hadjiusman told The Manila Times on Sunday.
