From being a “simpleng probinsyana na may matayog na pangarap” to bagging this year’s Miss Supranational-Philippines 2013 crown, 21-year-old Mutya Johanna Datul has come a long way. As she left for pre-pageant activities for Miss Supranational 2013 in Belarus, Eastern Europe on August 17, she told her well-wishers, “I am very overwhelmed and happy at napaka-excited na makapunta doon to represent the Philippines at Miss Supranational.”
Months of rigorous training after the Binibining Pilipinas pageant have kept Mutya in good stead, which she began soon after coronation night. From gym sessions, pasarela lessons, and language and personality development classes to TV guestings, ramp shows, photo shoots and numerous appearances at high-profile events, hopes are high that this beauty got more than enough help in preparing for her upcoming pageant stint.
Like her beauty queen idols, Miss Universe 2010 4th Runner-up Venus Raj and Miss Universe 2011 3rd Runner-up Shamcey Supsup, Mutya is looking forward to representing the country in the international pageant. She is confident she can do well and even win the pageant.
“Pinaghirapan ko ito. Sa heart ko at sa mind ko, ito talaga yung pinapangarap ko, kasi gusto kong makapagbigay ng karangalan sa Pilipinas,” she added.
The statuesque beauty from Sta. Maria, Isabela was given a rousing send off by Binibining Pilipinas Charities Inc., and her fellow Binibinis at Gloria Maris Restaurant at Gateway Mall at the Araneta Center in Cubao, Quezon City. She left the Philippines for Belarus buoyed by the support of her fans, and the well wishes of her fellow Binibining Pilipinas queens.
As 2012’s Miss Supranational 3rd Runner-up Elaine Kay Moll especially offered some wise advice for Mutya. “I told Mutya to be herself, to be confident, and to do her best.
She works very hard; she’s been preparing for this since she won in Binibining Pilipinas last April. Masipag siya, so I know all her hard work will pay off. My wish for her is for her to enjoy her time in Belarus, because this once-in-a-lifetime experience is priceless.”
Miss Universe Philippines 2013 Ariella Arida agrees that Mutya will do well in the pageant. “I believe that Mutya can take the Miss Supranational crown home. She is naturally charming and she also has a commanding stage presence. She has what it takes to win.”
Bea Rose Santiago, Binibining Pilipinas-International 2013, on the other hand, wished her fellow Binibini Gold winner luck. “Mutya is a very good representative for the country. She knows how to handle herself. I know it’s her first time to be out of the country, so my wish for her is that she keeps calm, so she won’t be too overwhelmed.”
Pia Wurtzbach, Binibining Pilipinas 2013 1st Runner-up, thinks that even if all eyes are on Mutya now, our country’s bet for Miss Supranational will be able to handle the pressure with grace. “She’s perfect for the pageant. Her biggest asset is her charm, and I think it’s going to take her a long way, especially in a country like Belarus, where I think they will be very pleased to have her. With her smile and her warmth, I think she will do very well in the pageant. I really know she’s going to win, not because of bias or anything, but because she’s a performer.
The Miss Supranational 2013 will be held on September 6 in Minsk, Belarus, which will be the fifth staging of the pageant. It was founded in 2009 in Poland by the World Beauty Association, with the aim to “unite our world with beauty.” Katsiaryna Buraya of Belarus is the reigning Miss Supranational. There are 94 confirmed candidates for this year’s edition.
