The Philippine national futsal team is scheduled to meet their Southeast Asian counterparts in the 2015 Asean Football Federation (AFF) Futsal Championship in Bangkok, Thailand starting on October 8.
Dubbed as the Muzangs, the national futsal team will be playing against a tough set of opponents in Group B of the said competition together with Australia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.
According to head coach Red Avelino, they have a good chance against Laos and Myanmar in this year’s tournament but down¬played the team’s chances of emerging out of the group stage.
He also explained that the team’s foray into the regional futsal stage would be to expose their younger players with the style of play of the international games and to develop their game.
“I’ve been told straight up that we were not expected to win any of the games. The objective [this year]is to expose the younger players and give them experience, that is the long term direction,” Avelino told The Manila Times in an interview.
The Muzangs’ mentor stated that they were only able to start their training a month ago as the original plan of the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) to form a new team was abandoned recently.
“They were supposed to start February but called for tryouts last June. Then a month ago, they said they couldn’t form one. The PFF approached me to help them out,” he said.
