MVP won’t seek reelection as SBP president

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) President Manny V. Pangilinan (MVP) announced that he would not seek reelection when the SBP holds its election on January.

“I was there in the meeting earlier and I just want to clarify that MVP is not retiring yet. He won’t seek another term in next year’s SBP election and that’s it. He is only allowed for two terms as president based on the by-laws. I’m pretty sure he will end his term,” SBP Deputy Director for International Affairs Butch Antonio told The Manila Times via phone interview on Thursday.

Antonio said that they are yet to announce the exact date SBP’s election next year.

Pangilinan, the chairman of SMART Communications, served as SBP president from 2008 to 2012. He was reelected to another four-year term in 2012.

Under his term, SBP hosted the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship. He was also responsible for the formation of Gilas Pilipinas national team, which succeeded in entering the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.

Pangilinan made an assurance that the Philippine Long Distance Telecommunication Group would still support SBP. JOSEF T. RAMOS
