YANGON: Myanmar soldiers shot dead four itinerant workers on Wednesday after they tried to enter a mine to search for gems cast aside by its military owners, according to a local MP.

Eleven others were injured when the soldiers opened fire at the mine, in the northwestern region of Sagaing, which is controlled by the military-backed Union of Myanmar Economic Holdings Ltd (UMEHL).
