A departing American was brought to a clinic after a portion of a restaurant’s ceiling at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 3 collapsed on Thursday morning.
The passenger, Day Adam Warner, 30, was taking breakfast with his wife and kid at the Sweet Ideas restaurant located at the pre-departure area when the board—about 3x7 meters—fell at 7 a.m., hitting Warner, who sustained lacerations in his right upper arm.
Warner’s wife and son were unhurt.
Other passengers who were eating at the restaurant at the time were also brought to the medical clinic for minor injuries.
Airport authorities said Sweet Ideas has been closed down while investigation is ongoing.
The Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) said a more thorough investigation is being conducted by the management to determine if the materials that were used for the construction of that particular ceiling as well as the construction of the restaurant itself were weak.
The management noted that the construction of the interiors of commercial spaces at the terminal is shouldered by the concessionaires themselves.
“Penalties will be imposed on the concessionaire should [his] construction plan be found to be sub-standard. The restaurant will remain closed until investigation and proper renovations are completed,” the MIAA said.
The American family later boarded their Delta Flight 172 around 10 a.m. on the same day.
