• NAIA Customs confiscates $10,000 concealed in parcel

Customs officials at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) seized on Thursday $10,000 hidden in a parcel that came from Pennsylvania, USA.

The package containing the bills were declared to contain magazines. It arrived in Manila aboard a Federal Express flight last February 22, according to authorities.

The cash was discovered by Customs examiner Cora Mansueto during a routine examination of parcels in the Federal Express warehouse.

Authorities said the parcel was shipped by Jon Estill, and a certain Roy G. Lopez is supposed to receive it in Manila.

A Customs lawyer said if the consignee is not fictitious, the bureau would probably charge the person with smuggling for non declaring the dollars.

Concealing of money inside the parcel is considered money laundering, the lawyer added.

The consignee should first secured a Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas permit before the shipping send the money to Manila.

The Customs officials said a warrant of seizure and detention will be issued for the confiscation of the dollars.
