Napocor, US AID sign pact to protect forest

The National Power Corporation (Napocor) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) on Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for joint programs on protecting forest covers and reversing forest degradation. The MOU aims to boost programs and advocacies in protecting rainforests of Angat watershed areas under the Napocor jurisdiction. It was signed by Ma. Gladys Cruz-Santa Rita, Napocor president; Emmanuel Umali, Napocor’s watershed management chief; Susan Brems, USAID mission director and B+WISER chief Efrain Laureano. Ninety seven percent of the raw water supply for Metro Manila households come from Angat watershed. Santa Rita, however, said around 2,000 hectares of its forest cover have been converted to grassland because of slash-and-burn activities of upland farmers.
