The National Police Commission (Napolcom) on Wednesday stripped Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña of his authority over the local police.
The en banc resolution signed by Interior Secretary Ismael Sueño taking back Osmena’s authority as deputized representative of the Napolcom was reportedly received by acting Mayor Edgardo Labella on Wednesday, according to lawyer Homer Mariano Cabaral, Napolcom Central Visayas director.
Osmeña withdrew his financial and logistical support to the new policemen assigned at Cebu City Police Office (CCPO) after Camp Crame removed Senior Supt. Benjamin Santos as its head and Chief Supt. Patrocenio Comendador Jr. as police director for Central Visayas.
The mayor claimed that the two officials were replaced despite his request to let them stay for at least 30 days so as not to disrupt the momentum they were gaining in the fight against illegal drugs.
Cabaral said the mayor’s withdrawal of support to the newly installed policemen including the new CCPO chief, Senior Supt. Joel Doria (former Pasay City Police Chief), cost him his authority over the police, including the Police Regional Office in Central Visayas.
