THE obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-gyn) of detained businesswoman Janet Lim-Napoles will take the witness stand to prove that she must undergo a necessary and urgent medical operation.
Lawyer Bruce Rivera, Napoles’ lawyer, said they will present in the next hearing scheduled on Tuesday Dr. Elsie Badillo-Pascua, Napoles’ OB-gyn at Saint Luke’s Medical Center in Global City, Taguig.
“We will present Dr. Pascua but we are not sure if she will come because of her schedule,” Rivera told The Manila Times.
Judge Elmo Alameda of Makati Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 150 has directed the defense team to present an expert who will prove the urgency and necessity of having Napoles undergo a medical operation to remove a cyst in her uterus.
“You better present a medical doctor, your manifestation has no evidentiary value,” Alameda told the defense panel during the last hearing on Napoles’ motion to undergo surgery and hospital confinement for post-operative care at St Luke’s-Global City.
It was Pascua who recommended that a transvaginal ultrasound (TVS) should be conducted on Napoles as her hemoglobin went down because of her bleeding.
Pascua earlier explained that the TVS would help determine whether the cyst is malignant or benign in nature. He said that if the cyst is malignant, Napoles would need immediate medical attention.
When asked on the health condition of his client, Rivera said: “She is okay but her menstrual cramps and bleeding are on and off.”
Rivera earlier said that his client’s family had already raised the fund needed for Napoles to undergo operations in a private hospital and not in the Philippine National Police (PNP) General Hospital.
He added that Napoles had a bad experience when she went for a medical checkup at the PNP medical facility in Camp Crame, Quezon City.
He said the government hospital has “outdated” facilities, which prompted his client to consider private hospitals.
“She had a bad experience when she underwent medical checkup. The facility is outdated since they used 2D ultrasound, that’s like a throwback,” he added.
Napoles is currently detained at Fort Santo Domingo in Santa Rosa, Laguna in connection with the serious illegal detention case filed against her by pork barrel fund scam whistleblower Benhur Luy.
