Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) Commissioner Andres “Chito” Narvasa Jr. promised on Tuesday that the PBA 41st season would feature fast and exciting games starting Sunday.
“We are going to rely more on skill rather than strength this season,” Narvasa told the media during a press conference at the Diamond Hotel in Roxas Boulevard. “The viewing public wanted to watch fast cohesive games.”
“It is good to have a high scoring basketball game,” he added. “We really wanted the game to become exciting and fast. So we are also very concerned how to improve the officiating and the game.”
Narvasa added that the PBA would establish a players association this season to protect the latter’s interests as well as the coaches. He explained that it is going to be a different set up and has nothing to do with the defunct PBA players association of the 1990’s.
“It is more of improving the relationship between the players and the team owners. We’re planning to launch this in the first conference. It also includes the benefits of all players,” added Narvasa. “It is exclusive only to the PBA.”
“We are going to support the players’ association of course. In fact, commissioner Narvasa is forming a group that will settle the disputes between players and team owners,” said Star Hotshots team governor Rene Pardo.
“At least, there is a right venue for the players where they can address their concern. The players and coaches won’t have to go to media anymore to air their concern and grievances,” he added. “They can now discuss their problem privately.”
Mahindra and player Alex Nuyles have already agreed to settle their contract dispute last week.
PBA Chairman Robert Non of San Miguel Beer said that the board of governors would hold a board meeting on Wednesday to discuss the formation of the national team for next year’s Olympic qualifiers.
The opening of the first conference Philippine Cup will be held at the Araneta Coliseum on Sunday. After the 3 p.m. opening ceremony, the Star Hotshots and the Rain or Shine Elasto Paintmasters will clash at 5:15p.m.
Games will resume on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena featuring Barako Bull vs Mahindra Enforcers at 4:15 p.m. and Ginebra vs Meralco at 7 p.m.
The other teams in the PBA are Commissioner Cup reigning champion Talk ‘N Text, Philippine Cup and Governors Cup defending champion San Miguel Beer, Blackwater, GlobalPort, Alaska and Northern Luzon Expressway.
