National Master Retanal rules Rapid Chess Championship


Philippine National Master Elwin Herbias Retanal dominated the Saudi Riyadh International Rapid Chess Championship-Al Riyadh Open Tournament 2013 held at the Saladin Hotel in Saudi Arabia.

Retanal, a former national junior champion, scored 10 points on 10 wins and one loss to rule the 11-round tournament.

The Filipino woodpusher nailed huge victories including his stunning win over top seed International Master Mohamed Tissir of Morocco in the sixth round. His lone defeat was handed by Gaafar Hassan of Egypt in the seventh round.

Tissir settled for second with 9.5 points.

Other Filipino entries were fourth placer Alvin Alcala (eight points), No. 10 Aldrin Gallardo (7.5 points), No. 12 Anatoly Guaniezo (7.5 points), no. 17 Noli Delloro (seven points) and No. 21 Drigo Teves (seven points).

Meanwhile, Grandmaster (GM) Mark Paragua climbed to sixth spot along with seven other players after six rounds in the 4th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games 2013 men’s standard chess in Incheon, South Korea.

Paragua raised his score to four points while GM Oliver Barbosa is at 14th with 3.5 points.

Chinese GM Yu Yangyi took the solo lead with 5.5 points followed by another Chinese, GM Ding Liren, who has five points. GMs Abdulrahman Salem of United Arab Emirates, Batchuluun Tsegmed of Mongolia and Rinat Jumabayev of Kazakhstan are sharing the third place with 4.5 points.

In the women’s division, Janelle Mae Frayna is in a tie for third with 4.5 points after six rounds behind leaders Chinese Woman GMs Hao Yifan (5.5 points) and Zhao Xue (five points).
