The Muaythai Association of the Philippines (MAP) will hold its annual Muaythai National Championships from December 15 to 18 at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
The National Open is a qualifying tournament for muaythai fighters who want to become members of the national team.
“We want to look for new talents that are potential achievers for our team,” said national coach Harold Gregorio in an interview with The Manila Times on Friday.
Over 200 practitioners are expected to join in the competition.
Gregorio said that the national team needs beefing up since there are only 12 of them in the pool, considering there will be a lot of competitions next year.
“That is one of the main reason s we are holding this kind of event,” he added.
Gregorio said that they have six prospects from the national try-outs last month but still the number is insufficient.
“We had a players and coaches meeting wherein we discussed as to how many players we want in the team and we agreed to have at least 30 members for both juniors and seniors team,” he added.
Among the international tournaments that the MAP intended to join are the World Championships in Belarus, Southeast Asian Games, World Junior Championships in Thailand, as well as the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games in Turkmenistan.
