National players shine in junior table tennis tournament

National players Ryan Rodney Jacolo and Jamaica Sy dominated the 2014 Table Tennis Association of the Philippines (TATAP) national junior’s qualifying tournament on Friday at the Batangas City Convention Center.

The lanky Jacolo, a former National University junior standout, outlasted Serknight Benoya in the boys’ 18-under finals, 3-1, while Sy beat Celine Ching of St. Stephen in the girls’ 18-under finals, 3-0, to cop the title.

John Michael Castro of Bacolod won over Reynaldo Templado of General Santos City in the finals of boy’s 15-under, 3-1, while Jannah Maryam Romero of Paco defeated Ann Gella Borbon of Bacolod in the championship round, 3-1, for the girls’ 15-under title.

The two-day event served as a qualifying tournament for this year’s Southeast Asian Table Tennis Junior Championship in Brunei.

Ting Ledesma, TATAP president, said Jacolo, Sy and the other standouts automatically qualify for the Brunei tournament.
