Smart, MRT 3 in fare tieup

AFTER tying up with the operator of the North Luzon Expressway (NLEX) and with Super-Ferry, Smart Communications Inc. announced it will offer a similar electronic payment system for Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT 3).

The new venture pits Smart with leading rival Globe Telecom Inc., which already offers an electronic payment system for MRT 3 commuters through its G-Pass.

Smart and MetroPass System Inc. have partnered to offer electronic payment system through Smart Money PayPass.

Besides electronic payment, the two companies will also offer innovative mobile and Internet applications that will leverage on their combined strengths in business processes and technology.

“This will culminate in a single ‘contactless’ card that will empower people to purchase essential services such as transport, mobile-phone reloading, bill payments, and remittances across physical, Internet and mobile spaces,” Smart said in a statement.

“Our partnership with MetroPass is very strategic. Through the tie-up, we will be able to bring our innovative services closer to our 25 million subscribers and give them added convenience,” Napoleon L. Nazareno, Smart president and chief executive officer, said.
