Cable TV piracy rules out soon

THE National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IP) will sign new rules and regulations this week to strengthen the government’s fight against cable piracy.

Under the draft IRR, the NTC will exercise jurisdiction over all administrative cases involving violations of permits, licenses and authority to operate radio and television including cable television (CATV).

For its part, the IPO has jurisdiction over all administrative cases involving intellectual property rights violations under Republic Act 8293, or the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.

The IRR also stated that the NTC shall monitor compliance by radio and TV broadcast operators, including CATV operators of all applicable laws, rules involving intellectual property rights and shall assist IP Philippines in the enforcement of its orders, decisions or resolutions.

Last year the NTC and the IPOPHIL signed a memorandum of agreement that aims to strengthen protection against signal theft in the cable TV industry. --Darwin G. Amojelar
