The Department of Education will
overhaul the curriculum in the 261 technical-vocational schools in
the country by focusing on 18 priority and competency-based courses
including electrical technology, vegetable production and fish
culture.
This is part of DepEd’s new
goal to strengthen tech-voc schools and encourage students to enroll
in tech-voc courses instead of aiming to get a college degree
following their dismal performance in the scholastic aptitude in the
National Career Assessment Examination.
A consultative conference is set
on April 10 to 11 to review and evaluate the course contents of the
existing tech-voc curriculum and come up with a final comprehensive
database of tech-voc high schools.
Other priority subject areas in
the proposed curriculum are fish capture, fish processing, crop
production, animal production, food processing, electronics
technology, machine shop technology, automotive technology, civil
technology, computer technology, welding, technical drawing and
information and communication technology software skills.
Education Secretary Jesli Lapus
earlier created a task force on tech-voc that will strengthen the
existing tech-voc schools in the country and formulate strategies
and policies in the implementation of the new tech-voc program in
the said schools.
Lapus said there is an existing
mismatch in the skills of students and the requirements in the job
market.
