Gun ban nets 130 persons in regions

BUTUAN CITY: The all-out campaign against gun ban violators in Regions 10 and 13 now rose to 130, the Police Regional Office 10 and 13 reported on Sunday.

As of this date, records of the command and operation center stated PRO 10 got the highest with 97 persons apprehended while PRO 13 arrested 33 persons, carrying firearms, grenades, explosives and other deadly weapons.

Spokespersons of PRO 10 and 13 said the apprehended persons are currently facing charges at various courts in the two regions for illegal possession of firearms and explosives, on violation of the election gun ban.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec), fully supported by the Philippine National Police (PNP) and Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), strictly enforce the election gun ban to secure the safety of all candidates and voters during the campaigning for national and local posts.

More police and military personnel were deployed in various strategic areas to ensure honest, orderly, peaceful elections in the May 14 synchronized national and local polls.

Meanwhile, the Comelec in the two regions, in cooperation with the AFP and PNP is planning to set a covenant with those seeking elective positions to ensure a peaceful electoral process in the provinces and cities in Agusan, Surigao, Bukidnon, Misamis and Camiguin in the May 14 elections.

This developed as the congressional, gubernatorial and mayoral battles in Agusan del Norte and Butuan City were being viewed as “hotly contested” because of the political fight between the two political kingpins—the Matriarch Plaza’s camp and the legendary Amante’s group.

However, Maj. Gen. Jose T. Barbieto, area command chief of the Army’s Northeastern and Northern Mindanao Fourth Infantry (Diamond) Division and Chief Supt. Antonio D. Nanas, regional director of PRO 13, assured on Sunday that the May 14 elections in Agusan might be peaceful, honest and orderly as both camps pledge to uphold the election laws, rules and regulations.

“Our only concern is to make this election peaceful,” added General Barbieto.
