DEVOTION this Holy Week need not be masochistic or
mantric; it can be creative and artistic too. Don’t torture
yourself with traffic, overcrowded resorts and overpriced rates.
Enough of the same old biblical movies. Contemplate and enlighten
yourself, not with repetitious chants or delirious fasting but with
art.
This year, make your pilgrimage
to the 2007 Kristo painting exhibit—Jesus Christ as interpreted in
66 ways by 66 artists. Into Thy hands, the exhibit is simultaneously
ongoing on the first floor of Gallery in Serendra and the Choice
Expression Gallery on Jupiter Street, Makati, until April 14.
Participating artists include
both the famous and the promising: Palma Tayona, Jose Ibay, Virgilio
Aviado, Nune Alvarado, Malang, Agang, Hermes Alegre, Jun Alvarez,
Felix Amoncio, Jovito Andres, Ral Arrogante, Julio Austria, Yeye
Babatuan, Aris Bagtas, Anton Balao, Jeps Belen, Art Bermido, Remy
Boquiren, Angel Cacnio, Michael Cacnio, Froilan Calayag, Buen
Calubayan, Roen Capule, Noel Catacutan, Salvador Ching, Salvador
Convocar, Marina Cruz, Melvin Culaba, Popoy Cusi, Ana de Leon,
Farley del Rosario, Fil de la Cruz, Camille de la Rosa, Robert
Deniega, Ferdinand Doctolero, Norman Dreo, Anthony Fermin, Caloy
Gabuco, Dante Lerma, Lindslee, Ted Maddela, Mark Magistrado, Jun
Martinez, Jason Montinola, Roel Obemio, Wilfredo Offemaria,
Nemiranda, Jaime Pacena, Lynard Paras, Al Perez, Brenda Praico, Fred
Ramirez, Cris Rebutiaco, Omi Reyes, Danny Santiago, Fidel Sarmiento,
Aner Sebastian, Rodel Tapaya, Gonzalo Uy, Joey Velasco, Lydia
Velasco, Joseph Villamar, Alvin Villaruel, Janice Young and James
Zabala.
Displaying all the works cheek to
cheek as a matrix, the exhibit challenges painters to offer a unique
perspective on Christ. What emerges is a multifaceted insight into
our faith.
In all humility, Tayona’s
canvas focuses on the Messiah’s pierced feet while Culaba
challenges us to see Christ in even the most pedestrian of souls.
Ibay’s portrait crackles with energy while Reyes’ suffering man
seethes with white heat. Cacnio has a relief of a golden lamb
casting a shadow of a cross on canvas while Praico startles us with
the vision of a lamb meekly suffering a crown of thorns. Obemio
provides a cubist perspective while Balao has a fauvist insight into
his heart. Contemplating on these works, one will realize how
personal each man’s faith is.
Purchases not only mean that
one’s own wall becomes a focal point for spiritual insight, they
also are one’s good deed this Easter week. Proceeds benefit A
Better Chance Foundation. All works are sized and priced uniformly
at P9,500 for a 12 by 14 inches boxed canvas. Call 901-3152 and
899-0718 for details.
