A total of 153
elementary and high-school students were selected to represent the
Philippines in various international math competitions this year.
The Mathematics
Trainers Guild-Philippines (MTG), which officially selected the
students, said another 112 students were tapped as alternates in the
event that some of the qualifiers are unable to join any
competition.
The students were
chosen for achieving remarkable performance in MTG’s 2007 Young
Mathematicians Intensive In-House Training Program that was held in
Subic.
MTG president Dr.
Simon Chua, the first Filipino to receive the international Paul
Erdos Award for mathematics, said the 153 qualifiers would be
required to attend the next stage of the MTG training program called
the 2007 Mathematical Summer Olympiad Training Program, which will
go on for a month from April 16 to May 18.
This year’s
qualifiers came from different schools, including Chiang Kai Shek
College, Zamboanga Chong Chua High School, PAREF Southridge School,
Xavier School, Ateneo de Manila University and St. Jude Catholic
School.
Last year MTG-trained
students have brought honor to the country by winning medals in
various math competitions held abroad including the 2006 India
International Young Mathematicians’ Convention; International
Mathematics and Science Olympiad in Jakarta, Indonesia; 29th
Australian Mathematics Competition; 2006 International Math
Competition in Singa-pore; and the 2006 China Middle School
Olympiad.
Chua said the
venue for the summer intensive training program would be held in
Pasig and Zamboanga City.
The intensive
training program is needed to prepare the students for the scheduled
international competitions. He said the program is free for the
official top qualifiers.
