Meralco seeks fresh power-rate increase

PLANS by state-owned National Power Corp. (Napocor) to cut its rates may be for naught, after the Philippines’ largest electricity distributor applied for an increase in its own tariffs, citing huge under recoveries arising from power purchased at the wholesale electricity spot market (WESM).

Early this year, the government suggested that Napocor, responsible for generating the bulk of the country’s power requirements, may soon cut its rates.
