Car thefts are once again on the
rise in Quezon City, police said Thursday.
At least one automobile is stolen
in the city every day in April, the Quezon City Police District
reported.
But the QCPD spokesman, Supt.
Asper Cabula, quickly dismissed claims that the city is again
becoming the country’s car-theft capital, a dubious reputation it
held a few years back.
“Quezon City has the biggest
land area compared with other cities and municipalities in Metro
Manila, and if the comparison will be based on the number of
incident a square kilometer, we believe that Quezon City will not be
the carjacking center,” Cabula said.
The latest carjacking took place
Wednesday night when gunmen seized a 1999 Toyota Prado being driven
by Jeffrey Mendoza on Katipunan Avenue.
In his statement to the police,
Mendoza said his car when was bumped from behind by a Mitsubishi
Outlander, prompting him to pull over.
He said several armed men got out
of the Outlander and ordered him out.
The carjackers commandeered the
Prado, leaving Mendoza behind.
Earlier, police received reports
of a Honda Civic stolen while parked on Congressional Avenue.
Cabula said the QCPD would
release statistics on car thefts soon.
The rising number of car thefts
has prompted the Philippine National Police chief Oscar Calderon to
order the PNP Traffic Management Group and Central Luzon Regional
Police Office to join forces in going after carjacking syndicates
operating in Quezon City.
