UAAP Rookie of the Year James Carl Canete and Colegio
San Agustin standout Kyle Cordero topped their respective divisions
Sunday in the 8th Truflex National Age Group Tennis Championships at
the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.
The fourth-seeded Canete, an
incoming sophomore at UST, defeated fifth seeded Akio Sy, 6-2, 6-4,
to capture his first-ever 18-under title.
Cordero, on the other hand, won
the 16-under title over Lawrence Magaway, 6-0, 6-1, and later
annexed the 14-under title by walkover after Bernardine Siso skipped
the final match to catch a flight to India.
No. 1 Jacob Lagman, who is based
in Cebu, captured the boys’ 12-under title over second seed
Christian Canlas, 6-0, 6-2, while top seed Vince Salas outplayed
second seed Vince Mark Tabotabo, 6-3, 7-6 (5), for the unisex
10-under crown.
In the girls division, Ma. Regina
Santiago downed Melissa Orteza, 6-2, 6-4, to pocket the 18-under
title. She also won the 16-under title over Sally Mae Siso, 6-1,
6-3.
Siso, also based in Cebu,
redeemed herself in the 14-under class when she beat Shanine Mae
Olivarez, 6-2, 6-4, in the finals of the tournament supported by
PLDT Vibe, Chris Sports, Head rackets and Cebuana Lhuillier.
Second seed Erika Lagura rallied
past Akiko de Guzman, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, for the girls’ 12-under
title.
