Canete, Cordero stop
foes to rule Truflex netfest

UAAP Rookie of the Year James Carl Canete and Colegio San Agustin standout Kyle Cordero topped their respective divisions Sunday in the 8th Truflex National Age Group Tennis Championships at the Rizal Memorial Tennis Center.

The fourth-seeded Canete, an incoming sophomore at UST, defeated fifth seeded Akio Sy, 6-2, 6-4, to capture his first-ever 18-under title.

Cordero, on the other hand, won the 16-under title over Lawrence Magaway, 6-0, 6-1, and later annexed the 14-under title by walkover after Bernardine Siso skipped the final match to catch a flight to India.

No. 1 Jacob Lagman, who is based in Cebu, captured the boys’ 12-under title over second seed Christian Canlas, 6-0, 6-2, while top seed Vince Salas outplayed second seed Vince Mark Tabotabo, 6-3, 7-6 (5), for the unisex 10-under crown.

In the girls division, Ma. Regina Santiago downed Melissa Orteza, 6-2, 6-4, to pocket the 18-under title. She also won the 16-under title over Sally Mae Siso, 6-1, 6-3.

Siso, also based in Cebu, redeemed herself in the 14-under class when she beat Shanine Mae Olivarez, 6-2, 6-4, in the finals of the tournament supported by PLDT Vibe, Chris Sports, Head rackets and Cebuana Lhuillier.

Second seed Erika Lagura rallied past Akiko de Guzman, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1, for the girls’ 12-under title.
