THE condition of Jose Miguel
“Mike” Arroyo has improved tremendously over the past two days,
with his vital organs, particularly his kidneys, starting to
function normally, his attending physician said Sunday.
“He now requires less and less
hours of therapy, his heart rate is acceptable and we can stop
dialysis by Monday or Tuesday,” Juliet Gopez-Cervantes said during
a briefing at the St. Luke’s Medical Center.
Arroyo underwent a 10-hour heart
operation on Tuesday.
Cervantes said the capability of
the President’s husband to discharge a significant amount of urine
indicates that his kidneys were now functioning properly. His
pancreas and liver were also stable.
Cervantes said antibiotics were
still being administered to Mr. Arroyo to avoid infection that could
be brought by the catheter inserted in his urethra to drain it of
fluids.
“Although there are no visible
signs of infection we are continuously giving the first gentleman
antibiotics,” she added.
Cervantes put Arroyo’s recovery
rate at 90-95 percent. She said he could be discharged this week.
Doctors however prevented Arroyo
from watching the fight between boxing idol Manny Pacquiao and
Mexican Jorge Solis on Sunday to make sure his blood pressure would
not shoot up because of the excitement.
“The medical team has decided
not to allow him to watch the fight . . . we will just inform him if
Pacquiao wins . . . we just have to find a way to tell him in a way
that he will not cause his blood pressure to rise,” Cervantes
said.
Cervantes said Arroyo told her he
slept better than the other night despite some back pain.
