Teachers in 80 elementary and
high schools in the country will now have access to the Internet,
online content and training in a new agreement between the
Department of Education and Smart Communications and Philippine
Business for Social Progress under the Smart Schools Program.
The program provides access to
the Internet, access to educational content and training for
teachers of selected public high schools throughout the country.
Connectivity to the Web allows teachers to be updated on the latest
information and teaching modules. There are currently 100 public
secondary schools nationwide participating in the program.
A Smart Schools website (www.smartschools.ph)
was also launched in March 2006 and features online content that
teachers can use for research in making class presentations and in
exchanging best practices with colleagues.
Of the 80 additional schools, 50
are high schools and 30 public elementary schools that will be
included in the new Smart Schools Program. The project will run for
two years at a cost of P23.4 million.
“It is important for our
teachers to be up to date with the latest information and trends on
teaching. We are thankful for the continuing support of Smart and
PBSP, and the encouragement this project has inspired in our
teachers,” said Education Secretary Jesli Lapus.
