The Parañaque City government recently announced its
plans to give Baclaran a major facelift by installing more
streetlamps, waiting sheds and public benches in the city’s
commercial center. The area’s sidewalks will also be rehabilitated
with brick pavements.
“With this plan, we intend to
decongest the major streets of traffic and rationalize the entire
vending structure for the convenience of shoppers,” Parañaque
Mayor Florencio Bernabe Jr. said.
Under the master plan designed by
the city planning and coordinator’s office (CPCO), a specific road
or street would be assigned for particular merchandise.
For example, a street would be
allotted for electronic devices, while another would be for
footwear. Other roads will be allotted for bags, accessories and
other items, while another section will be assigned for wholesale
and retailing of clothes.
The scheme would enable shoppers
to have an easier time locating the products they are looking for,
instead of having to walk through crowded roads.
A multilevel parking structure
will also be constructed in the shopping district for customers with
private vehicles. Meanwhile, public utility vehicles, such as
jeepneys and tricycles, will be rerouted to avoid the usual traffic
gridlocks on main thoroughfares like Redemptorist Road and Quirino
Avenue.
Bernabe said the implementation
of the project will coincide with the forthcoming construction of
the new LRT line 3 extending from Baclaran Station to Bacoor, Cavite.
“Again, these are all for the
convenience, comfort and safety of visitors and residents of
Baclaran,” he said.
Bernabe acknowledged the efforts
of CPCO chief Benigno Rivera, who conceptualized the urban
revitalization and renewal plan for Baclaran.
