Dealing Abu Sayyaf
the death blow |
|
By beheading its seven hostages last week, the Abu
Sayyaf appears to be taunting the military, which has orders from
the President to “wipe out” the terrorist group before the May
elections. The Abu Sayyaf wants to drive home the point that despite
being pursued by 5,000 troops in Jolo, it could still snatch
innocent civilians, decapitate them, and even inform the authorities
where to find the severed heads.
Barbaric acts are not alien to
the Abu Sayyaf. The group beheaded some of its captives, including
an American man, while on the run several years ago. It has set off
dozens of bombs that have killed scores of civilians. Many times in
the past, the military had confidently declared that the Abu Sayyaf
was a spent force. Shortly after the confirmation of the deaths of
Abu Sayyaf chieftains Abu Solaiman and Khadaffy Janjalani early this
year, Armed Forces Chief of Staff Hermogenes Esperon said the group
was leaderless and disorganized. “We will clear Sulu of terrorists
and we will not allow them to thrive in any part of the country,”
General Esperon said.
