Police arrests suspect in 1999 Balweg slay

CAMP DANGWA, Benguet: One of the prime suspects in the assassination of former renegade priest Conrado “Ka Ambo” Balweg in 1999 was arrested in Baguio on April 21, the police reported.

Intelligence operatives of the Benguet Provincial Police Officer lead by Senior Supt. Moro Lazo arrested Fransisco Jun Bonoan alias Cesar and Jojo in Barangay Irisan by virtue of an arrest warrant.

Supt. Joseph Adnol, chief information officer of the Cordillera police command, said that Bonoan is the acting secretary of the New People’s Army Urban White Area Committee and concurrent member of the executive committee of the NPA’s Ilocos-Cordillera Regional Committee.

It was not immediately known if Bonoan resisted arrest when accosted by the Benguet police with the help of agents from the Regional Intelligence Officer and Cordillera police command.

Balweg was assassinated by NPA cadres inside his ancestral house in Malibcong, Abra, on December 31, 1999, or more than a decade after he lead the Cordillera People’s Liberation Army (CPLA) sign a peace pact with the Aquino government.

Balweg, a priest turned rebel leader, formed the CPLA and defected from the mainstream CPP-NPA due to conflicting ideologies.
