Increase blamed on greater use of expensive fuel

Consumer power bills to go up next month

FILIPINOS should brace for higher bills next month, as demand for electricity is expected to peak in May, and extreme heat is forcing the use of power plants running on more expensive fuel, according to the operator of the country’s energy spot market.

In a briefing, Mario Pangilinan, vice-president for operations of the Philippine Electricity Market Corp. (PEMC), said the peak demand registered in April at around 6,600 megawatts, or 200 megawatts more than earlier forecast, will “be surpassed in the coming month because May is the historical annual peak for the Luzon grid.”
