INTERIOR and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno
on Friday created an anticorruption team to look into reports
regarding several officials and members of the Bureau of Fire
Protection engaged into illegal selling of fire extinguishers and
other fire protection equipment.
Puno named Undersecretary for
Public Safety Marius Corpus to head the BFP-Special Action Group,
which is tasked to go after erring personnel and officials of the
fire department.
The creation of the new special
action group, which was contained in Department Order 2007-277,
abolished a special action group of similar nature organized during
the previous administrations.
Puno said the move was based on
the complaints received by the department particularly on fire
officials who make a living out of the illegal selling of fire
fighting devices.
“This is to ensure expeditious
action on complaints against our BFP personnel alleged to be
directly or indirectly endorsing, promoting or selling fire
protection equipment and appliances, such as fire extinguishers and
fire alarm systems,” Puno said.
Corpus on the other hand said the
creation of the new BFP action team would immensely help in the
Department’s determined and resolute campaign against graft and
corruption in the public safety sector.
“We will make sure that we
carry out our mandate with the end in view of curbing if not totally
eradicating graft and corruption in the Fire Bureau, and ensure that
fire safety standards are complied with by owners and managers of
business establishments,” he said.
