Seeing double: Nico Sepe

Nico Sepe is a photographer without compromise. In the age where every damn fool with a digital SLR thinks he can be a pro by undercutting the veterans with giveaway rates, Sepe is old school in every good way.

He’s a grizzled artist who sticks to the tools of the masters—an arsenal of all-manual 35mm film rangefinder Leica cameras, the unassuming Rolls Royce of cameras—to get the job done. Just like Sepe himself, his traditionalist cameras accept no shortcuts. He’s a wiry war-hardened documentarian with many a tale to tell: of spending weeks in the jungle with communist guerrillas, risking being caught in crossfire and eating nothing but pineapples just to get the story right; of being at the forefront of antidictatorship rallies, coup d’états and people power revolts to capture the decisive moment; and of being in the midst of unforgettable geniuses and iconic unknowns to fathom humanity. And he has the pictures to show for it: arresting, insightful and epiphanic. Each shot is a conversation where even the quiet is eloquent.
